The celebration of children's literature, both traditional and modern, was the main theme behind the party which the organisers hoped would encourage children to read more. The day focused on the family and the key role that grandparents and parents, relatives and friends play in shaping a child's love of books through the favourite stories that families pass down through generations.

The gardens of Buckingham Palace were transformed into a magical playground where children could explore scenes from their favourite books and sit down and enjoy a special version of the traditional British picnic tea. The highlight of the day was an hour-long entertainment devised and created by children's author, David Wood. The specially written show was introduced by Sophie Dahl, the granddaughter of Roald Dhal and broadcast live on the BBC.
